30 Americans
Location: Milwaukee Art Museum
About The Exhibition
The exhibition was based on the exploration of contemporary American art since the 1970’s. The artists consist of African Americans that have struggled to find their identity as a contemporary artist with cultural backgrounds. The artists express issues of race, gender, sexuality, and many more, where others choose to remain silent about them. These artworks allow the viewer to interpret these issues and appreciate the different styles of art making throughout the decades.
Reflections
In seeing the 30 Americans exhibit, I saw the intense issues that were materialized in many of the artworks. Although some of these images may not have been suitable for young children, I think they would really able to understand the idea of social norms that are set in place in our own society and how those norms differ from other cultures. I was able to understand further why incorporating art among other cultures is extremely important. I have been fortunate to see works from many cultures, and upon viewing, have been able to learn more about their lifestyles and cultural practices, both past and present. Learning and experiencing these other cultures I think is very important and helps a person develop and broaden their perspectives. Children need to know that their culture is one of many in the world they live in, and art is a stepping stone that can lead them into exploring these cultures.
An Interesting Work Of Art
Soundsuit - By: Nick Cave
There were several soundsuits throughout the exhibit, but I will be focusing in on the one you see and the left. These life size suits were actually made to be worn by both male and female dance performers. The suits were elaborate and made of mixed materials. Although these suits were not in use, one could only imagine what the experience would be like. The stiffness of the suit actually gave me the sensation of absence. The fact that the face, and therefore the gender, of the wearer was masked made these artworks so interesting. There was no way for someone to know who was in the suit or even the sex of the individual. I compared this to our society, a society that obsesses over our gender by identifying and separating one from another. Most students would find that strange or would not even understand at all. When students are presented with new concepts that go against their initial understanding, it allows them to critically analyze both concepts and come up with a better understanding of the two.
Questions
Why do you think the faces were hidden in all of the soundsuits?
Would you wear any of the suits? Why or why not?
Would you do anything differently if you had the suit on (and no one could see you)?
